Delizioso classico la cui lettura ho rimandato per anni, e finalmente ho ultimato. 

Non molto scorrevole la lettura in lingua originale di un romanzo scritto un secolo fa, ma vale lo sforzo, senza alcun dubbio. 

Geniale Abbot, fantastici i suoi limitati mondi con i loro limitati abitanti. Perfetta metafora della nostra limitata esistenza, dei limiti della nostra mente di fronte a ciò che non conosciamo.

Denuncia interessante dell'ordinamento costituito, della miopia e arroganza di chi con ogni mezzo si adopera per preservare uno status quo che privilegia talune categorie e ne assoggetta altre.

Bellissimo, geometrico, interessante romanzo in più dimensioni.

"King: Exhibit to me, if you please, this motion from left to right.

I: Nay, that I cannot do, unless you could step out of your Line altogether.

King: Out of my Line? Do you mean out of the world? Out of Space? 

I: Well, yes. Out of YOUR world. Out of YOUR space. For your Space is not the true Space. True Space is a Plane; but your Space is only a Line." (p. 50)

Progressioni algebriche e geometriche. Dal punto alla linea, poligoni e solidi. 

E se ci fosse un'altra dimensione? Una quarta? Se così fosse, perché non altre?
Che fine fanno le menti illuminate in società conservatrici? Qual è il destino dell'intelligenza, quando si confronta con chi ha come unico obiettivo il mantenimento dello status quo?

"Either this is madness or it is Hell". "It is neither", calmly replied the voice of the Sphere, "it is Knowledge; [...]" (p. 64)

"For why should the thirst for knowledge be aroused, only to be disappointed and punished?" (p. 70)

"[...] when I saw a Line and inferred a Plane, I in reality saw a Third unrecognized Dimension, [...]. And does it not follow that, in this region, when I see a Plane and infer a Solid, I really see a Fourth unrecognized Dimension, [...]?"
